NAHJ D.C. meets with top Biden Administration officials

Members of the Washington, D.C., chapter of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists participated Wednesday in a press briefing with several top Latinos in the Biden administration, including Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra, White House Political Strategy and Outreach Director Emily Ruiz, and White House Office of Intergovernmental Affairs Director Julie Chávez Rodríguez.

The wide-ranging discussion included remarks on asylum, immigration reform, the environmental impact of the train derailment in Palestine, Ohio, and COVID-19. On the pandemic that has disproportionately affected the nation’s communities of color including Latinos, Secretary Becerra spoke on how the Biden administration will continue to ensure accessibility to tests, treatments, and vaccines after the COVID emergency declaration is lifted in May.

“There isn’t a human being in this country that has paid a penny for that vaccine,” said Becerra, adding that the Biden administration will work with community health clinics to provide services to the uninsured and low-income communities.

NAHJ President Yvette Cabrera said the gathering was a unique opportunity that she hopes will happen more often.

“I’m so pleased that our members had this opportunity to question the Biden Administration’s top Latino officials on a wide range of issues, ranging from COVID-19 misinformation to immigration reform,” said Cabrera, who was one of several NAHJ members who came from other cities to attend the meeting. “This accessibility is foundational to the work we do as journalists to hold our government accountable to the American public. As Latino journalists, we bring a unique perspective to our coverage and that was reflected in the questions we asked during this press briefing.”

This was the NAHJ’s first White House briefing in nearly nine years. “During the Trump Administration, I requested a briefing with top Latino officials at the White House,” said D.C. Chapter President Brandon Benavides, a former NAHJ National President. “Despite promises from the director of communications at the time, no briefing was held with NAHJ. I’m satisfied the Biden administration granted our request and went above and beyond what we asked for,” Benavides said.

White House briefing with senior Latino officials

We are pleased to announce we will have a White House briefing with top Latino officials in the Biden administration.

When? Wednesday afternoon, February 22, 2023, at the White House.

Members in good standing will be able to attend. We have a limited number of seats. Please email nahjdc@gmail.com to RSVP (Note: an RSVP does not guarantee admittance). The meeting will last most of the afternoon beginning at 3:30 PM followed by a membership dinner.

As with our previous White House briefings, the meeting will be on the record and include a White House Press Room tour.

As you may remember, the Obama Administration first invited us for a White House briefing to discuss the Affordable Care Act. The briefing was so successful, the administration invited us the following year to discuss Open Enrollment.

During the Trump Administration, we requested a White House briefing. At the time, I was national president and met with the Director of Media Affairs, Helen Aguirre. She promised the same access to a briefing with top Latino officials in the administration. But the administration never followed through with a briefing.

We submitted our same request for a White House briefing and the Biden Administration agreed. We look forward to continuing our tradition of a White House briefing with top Latino officials in the administration.

Alexandra Marquez: New recipient of The Charlie Ericksen Internship Supplement

Marquez Photo

The supplement provides awardees with $465 for metro transportation to be put on a SmarTrip Card and $35 for NAHJ student membership dues (worth $500 total).

Alexandra Marquez is a junior journalism and anthropology major at the University of Maryland, College Park. She is a Silver Spring, MD, native who always dreamed of reporting in D.C. and covering one of the three branches of national government. This semester, she had the opportunity to do so at the McClatchy D.C. Bureau. Alexandra covers various congressional and national news for McClatchy, with a focus on covering the Texas congressional delegation for the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. She’s previously written for The Diamondback in College Park and Washington Gardener Magazine in Silver Spring.

Alexandra is grateful and honored to receive the Charlie Ericksen Internship Supplement and to be recognized by NAHJ D.C. for her work as a Latina student in journalism, a field where Hispanic people are underrepresented. She’s excited to work with NAHJ in the future and to inspire others to pursue the valuable career of journalism.

Alexandra’s parents are from El Salvador and Ukraine and she speaks three languages – Russian, Spanish and English. Her passion for journalism began when she joined her high school newspaper and began covering issues important to the Silver Spring community, like Board of Education initiatives, new demographic trends in the school district and opportunity gaps between students of different socio-economic backgrounds. When Alexandra’s not reading, writing or listening to the news, she’s probably playing with her two cats.
