UPDATE: We are so thrilled that so many members want to attend our Chapter Mixer and Membership Drive. We reached capacity. Those who made the list will get an email. Those who are on the waiting-list will also get an email. If you RSVP please ensure your membership is current. You can renew on Sunday. Remember the NAHJ membership special is $50. The chapter does not have a separate chapter fee.

The NAHJ D.C. Chapter Board declared the Chapter Mixer and Membership Drive a private event. So there will not be any media availability for our special guests: San Antonio Mayor Julián Castro and Telemundo Anchor José Díaz-Balart. The Chapter will release pictures, video, and a write-up on our website as we usually do with our events. If you would like a one-on-one interview with our special guests, we suggest to contact their office directly.

We are pleased to announce San Antonio Mayor, Julián Castro, and Telemundo  Anchor, José Diaz-Balart, will make special appearances at our chapter mixer and membership drive on Sunday, January 20, 2013 from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm.

NAHJ DC Member Carolyn Brown will host our mixer at her home in the Palisades neighborhood. Come eat mini-barbecue sandwiches, macaroni and cheese, and Texas cornbread-pudding from Rocklands BBQ. Come mingle with the top journalists in our region while enjoying a glass of wine. The mixer is free and open to NAHJ members and guests.

Jacqueline Baylon Resigns from Chapter Board, Moves to New York City

Chapter Members,

Jacqueline Baylon submitted her resignation. She is moving to New  York City to work at Digital First. Although she served as secretary for a few months, she was instrumental in several chapter events beginning  with Una Noche con Periodistas. She is the one who secured our first  chapter donation: a beer keg. She also planned our August meeting at the Scripps Howard Washington Bureau and hosted our Fall Chapter Mixer  Under the Stars at her home.

We will miss her and we wish her well.

If you are interested in joining the chapter as secretary please let me know.

Sincerely,
Brandon Benavides

National Permanently Ends Funding for Existing Chapters

Chapter Members,

During the Unity Convention in Las Vegas, the previous National Board decided to permanently end funding for existing chapters. Given National’s financial difficulties, the Association has not provided funding to our chapter in the past two years.

Our NAHJ DC Chapter Board wrote a letter to National President, Hugo Balta, asking him and the Current Board to reconsider investing in Chapters by providing quartering membership grants. In the past, National would give Chapters 50 percent of the membership dues each quarter based on the number of members who joined and checked the respective chapter box. The current National Board decided to table the discussion and have a committee look into the matter.

Our Chapter has never charged a Chapter membership fee. We understand for some of our members it is already a sacrifice to pay the $75 national membership dues each year. Our NAHJ DC Chapter Board once again decided against charging a Chapter membership fee.

This does not change our plans for the future. We will continue to provide affordable workshops, networking opportunities, and membership meetings with newsroom leaders and news makers. We look forward to seeing you at our monthly activities.

Sincerely,
Brandon Benavides
Chapter President
