Proposed Chapter Board Resolution: Support Corporation for Public Broadcasting

Washington, D.C. Chapter Board of Directors

We, the Board of Directors, will consider the following resolution during our Chapter Board conference call June 27, 2012. We drafted this resolution on our own accord. If adopted, the Board will present the resolution in person to members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus at the U.S. Capitol on July 18, 2012 during our chapter membership meeting.

WHEREAS The U.S. Congress passed the Public Broadcasting Act of 1967 and President Lyndon B. Johnson signed it into law, creating the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB), and

WHEREAS the Corporation for Public Broadcasting partially funds Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) and National Public Radio (NPR), and

WHEREAS the CPB partially funds PBS NewsHour, Washington Week, and other series on PBS, and

WHEREAS National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ) members, including Ray Suarez, a senior correspondent for PBS NewsHour, and several producers for NPR provide award-winning reports, keeping viewers informed of news  across the country and the globe, and

WHEREAS PBS and NPR depend on federal funding to continue operating at their current levels, and

WHEREAS NAHJ DC members make their livelihoods and sustain their families working for PBS and NPR– employers that rely on federal funding, now therefore be it

RESOLVED that the NAHJ DC Chapter Board urge members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus to support and collaborate with their congressional colleagues on both sides of the aisle to fully fund CPB, and be it further

RESOLVED that the NAHJ DC Chapter Board condemns any attempt to withhold funding or eliminate CPB and protect the First Amendment right to free speech and freedom of the press.

The NAHJ Washington, D.C. Chapter has more than 100 members who live and work in the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia. Our members report for local, national, and international media companies.

  1. It is a very good initiative and I think it is a good idea looking for the support in Congress
