Meet our Fall 2016 Charlie Ericksen Supplement Winner: Valeria Massarelli

NAHJ DC is pleased to announce our Fall 2016 Charlie Ericksen Journalism Supplement winner Valeria Massarelli. We had a highly competitive pool of applicants this semester and were very impressed with Valeria’s story and passion for journalism. She will receive a supplement worth $500 to be placed on a Metro SmarTrip card and pay for her NAHJ membership. She will also be matched with a mentor who works as a journalist in the DC area.

Valeria Massarelli, Intern at NTN24

valerianahjValeria was born and raised in Caracas, Venezuela. She graduated from Mass Communication at Universidad Católica Andrés Bello with a minor in Audiovisual Arts. She was always passionate about telling stories and the best way for her to do it was through a camera. But something was missing.
In February 2014, a series of protests and riots started in her home country and the national media was not covering it. That’s when she decided she wanted to be a journalist. She says that when living in a censored place, you start to value and realize the importance of journalism.
In August 2015, she moved to Washington, D.C. to pursue her dream of becoming a journalist. She is currently in the third semester of an MPS in Journalism at Georgetown University. She is interning at  NTN24, a Hispanic international news network. She is the
production assistant of the show Efecto Naím. The internship requires hard work, objective thinking, meticulousness, teamwork, great vocabulary, and excellent writing skills. She has learned a lot about international affairs and how to deliver evergreen content to a Hispanic audience.
Her goal is to become a news producer for a TV show about Hispanics and Latin American topics. She believe Hispanics are underrepresented in the newsroom, even though they are the largest majority in the United States. She wants to contribute with her knowledge of foreign topics hoping she can  increase the presence of Hispanic journalists in the industry.
