NAHJ Washington, D.C. Board Meeting
September 30,2015 at National Press Club
Present: Azhar AlFadl Miranda, Melissa Macaya, Patricia Guadalupe, Beatriz Pascual and Aileen Schlef
The board discussed raising the funds of the Charlie Ericksen supplement to $450 beginning in the Spring semester. The board will vote in early December on that measure.
The board discussed places of growth, especially mentioning the need to expand our presence within the Spanish language media community in Washington. We also discussed increasing our partnerships with local Latino and Latin American organizations.
The treasurer presented the latest financial report of the chapter.
The board discussed future monthly meetings and set the fall calendar. We also looked ahead to our spring calendar.

August 27, 2014
Present: Azhar AlFadl Miranda, Melissa Macaya, Patricia Guadalupe, Rosalba Ruiz, Grace Flores Hughes
Melissa motioned to appoint chapter member and former president Brandon Benavides as head of a task force for investigating the possibility of registering NAHJDC as a non-profit. Azhar seconded the vote. The motion passed with 4 votes. Rosalba was not present for voting.
Azhar motioned to appoint Brandon Benavides as Chair of the DC Journalism Job Fair, to be held in April. Patricia seconded the motion. The motion passed with 4 votes. Rosalba was not present for voting.
The chapter discussed announcing upcoming board meetings to membership should anyone outside the board also like to attend.
The board discussed future monthly meeting and set the fall calendar.

Resolution Allowing Candidates to run for Co-Presidents
Brandon Benavides proposed the following chapter board resolution to
the full membership on Monday, June 2.
Maria Pia seconded.
Following a week of comments, the chapter board voted on Friday, June 6.
The resolution passed 2 to 0.
All authorized members of the chapter board participated in the vote.
Three members of the board who are seeking re-election recused
themselves from the vote.
Resolution
WHEREAS, two candidates jointly nominated themselves as co-presidents
for the 2014-2015 term;
WHEREAS, members of the chapter board volunteer their time and talent;
WHEREAS, the candidates are committed to our organization;
WHEREAS, they found a way to lead the chapter that works with their schedules;
WHEREAS, the NAHJ Atlanta Chapter appointed co-presidents
WHEREAS, the National Bylaws do not provide a means to elect co-presidents;
RESOLVED, the NAHJ Washington D.C. Chapter Board will ask the national
association to amend our Bylaws to allow co-presidents;
RESOLVED, until such action is taken the Chapter Board will allow
co-presidents the option to run for office on their own accord.

NAHJ DC Chapter Board Votes to Co-Sponsor the D.C. Latino Caucus
Mayoral Forum and Straw Poll.

Brandon Benavides motions for the NAHJDC chapter to co-sponsor the DC
Latino Caucus Mayoral Forum and Straw Poll. The chapter will provide
moderators for the event.
Melissa Macaya seconds this motion. Brandon Benavides, Melissa
Macaya, Azhar AlFadl, and Maria-Pia Negro Zevallos vote in favor.
Motion passes 4-0. Rosalba Ruiz was not present.
NAHJ Washington, D.C. Chapter Appointments
January 23, 2014
I, Brandon Benavides, Chapter President, hereby appoint Melissa Macaya as NAHJ DC Vice-President effective today. Melissa will fill the vacancy left by Jackie Diaz’s resignation. She will serve the remainder of her term which ends at the end of July.
I hereby appoint Maria-Pia Negro as NAHJ DC At-Large Officer effective today. Maria-Pia will fill the vacancy left by Melissa Macaya’s appointment. She will serve until the the end of July.
I hereby appoint Azhar Alfadl Miranda as NAHJ DC Secretary effective today. She will serve until the the end of July.
I exercised the rule of Article X Section 3 in our Bylaws.
Article X SECTION 3: SUBORDINATE OFFICERS AND STAFF
The Board of Directors may appoint, and may authorize the president to appoint, any other officers that the business of the corporation may require, each of whom shall have the title, hold office for the period, have the authority, and perform the duties specified in the bylaws or determined from time-to-time by the Board of Directors.
The Chapter Board Board approved the appointments and everyone accepted their appointments.

NAHJ DC Chapter Conference Call Monday, January 14 at 7:30 PM
Present: Brandon Benavides Jackie Diaz Rosalba Ruiz
Brandon motioned to make the NAHJ DC Chapter Mixer and Membership Drive a private event with no media availability. Jackie seconded the motion. The motion passed 2-1.
Rosalba suggested to let members know they can contact San Antonio Mayor Julián Castro press people directly to setup an interview with him before or after the event.
The chapter will still take pictures and video and write something up on its website.
Everyone who attends must be a NAHJ member or a guest of someone who is a member since this is a membership drive.
We will remind attendees this is a private event at someone’s private residence.
We also decided members should wear business attire.

Support the hiring, promotion and retention of Latino journalists in
