NAHJ DC is pleased to announce our Spring 2018 Charlie Ericksen Journalism Supplement winner Javier Pachon Bocanegra. The NAHJ DC board was very impressed with his passion for journalism and eagerness to grow as a news correspondent while interning at Spanish news wire EFE. He will be awarded a supplement worth $500 and be matched with a mentor who works as a journalist in the DC-area.

My name is Javier Pachon Bocanegra. I am a Spanish journalist based in Washington D.C. interested in politics and social stories that could change lives. Born in Malaga, Andalusia (Spain), in 1995, I graduated with a journalism degree at the University of Malaga and spent six months studying a minor in communications in Leeuwarden, Netherlands, in 2015-16 as an Erasmus student. Since then, I have worked as an intern for the largest newspaper in my city, diario SUR; collaborated with the local radio COPE; worked for Agencia EFE in Malaga; and, currently, write as an intern correspondent for EFE News in Washington, where I am experiencing what it’s like to work at a foreign bureau focused on politics. I look forward to finding a place in the amazing world of journalism, where I really enjoy working and learning with hardworking and talented colleagues. I have always believed in independent and committed journalism as a condition for democracy. At a small scale, I tried to pursue this at my university, where some colleagues and I founded a digital newspaper. Here in Washington, I have covered relevant information like the abolition of net neutrality and environmental actions.
